Angela was asked also about common mistakes people often make when representing themselves on LinkedIn. Her advice follows these tips:

  1. Use a professional picture. Avoid photos from other social media like Facebook.
  2. Fill in everything. Cover your background, jobs, clubs, associations, skills, and more. Treat it like a secondary resume.
  3. Elaborate on your jobs. Share more about your accomplishments and use examples. This can be longer than your one-page resume.
  4. Build a network. Add more connections, like teachers, classmates, people in the industry, coworkers, and more. Even people from networking events!
  5. Use LinkedIn ongoing. You can contact people and get career advice. Meet up in person with a recruiter, they like proactive behaviors.
