Identify Your Skills and Interests
Reading
Before embarking on the journey of starting a business, it’s crucial to have a pool of ideas to determine what you should sell. Brainstorming is an effective method to quickly generate a variety of ideas, allowing you to select the most promising ones for further exploration. The goal here is to brainstorm a list of your skills and interests, which will help in creating a business that not only aligns with your strengths but is also something you enjoy doing. To get started, open a new document and add a title at the top, centering it for clarity. Directly beneath the title, on a new line, type “Skills and Interests” and align this text to the left side of the page. Begin brainstorming by listing at least five interests, activities, or hobbies that you enjoy, each on a new line. To enhance readability and organization, insert bullets in front of each idea on your list, selecting a bullet style that suits your preference.
As you add more ideas to your list, consider including skills or knowledge you’ve acquired through various experiences such as hobbies, volunteering, or paid work. Once you have at least five skills and interests noted, extend your brainstorming to include feedback from others. Think about what family members, friends, and coworkers have mentioned you’re good at, as they might offer insights into strengths you hadn’t considered. Type these additional ideas into a separate list within your brainstorming document. With this, you’ve completed the first part of your brainstorming session. Looking ahead, the next step will involve identifying resources available to you that can be utilized for your business, which will be covered in the following video.
